Dr. Hiten Madhani is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco. He and his team investigates conflicts within and between cells. Within cells, the group seeks to elucidate the RNA- and chromatin-based genome defense mechanisms that distinguish cellular genes from parasitic (or "selfish") nucleic acids including transposons and simple repeats. Such silencing mechanisms are critical for genomic stability and have played a pivotal role in shaping eukaryotic evolution. Recent studies have revealed an unexpected role for stalled spliceosomes in the recognition of transposable elements. The team also investigates the conflict between the most common cause of fungal meningitis, Cryptococcus neoformans, and its mammalian host. Here, the goal is to identify the molecular specializations that endow this single species with the ability to cause ~1/3 of deaths from HIV/AIDS worldwide.
